Kenji's father owned a liquer store. In the year 1959 he invested a lot of money in bean but his decision was not a wise one. As a result he was almost bankrupt. At the very same time, Kenji's mother's carrying Kenji. He wass afraid to have another child due to the financial situation. But Kiriko blurted out that she will raise the baby as her own son (Volume 2 Chapter 8).
