Fukubei is one of Kenji's childhood friends. The strange thing's not much is known about Fukubei. In fact, Kenji barely remembered Fukubei when Yukiji planned the class reunion (Volume 3 Chapter 5). On reunion day, Fukubei told Kenji about his family problems such as he's been having an affair with another woman so his wife joined a strange cult named "Friend". Fukubei's the one who planted the idea that Sadakiyo is "Friend" when he (pretended?) was drunk after the reunion party. Fukubei was also part of the gang (Others include: Yoshitsune, Maruo, Otcho, Yukiji, Mon-Chan, and Kenji) that rose up against "Friend" organization in the attempt to stop the spread of the virus on the eve of New Year 2000.
We learned later that the apartment he took Kenji to and the family that lived there were not really his (The truth was found by Maruo who decided to pay a visit to Fukubei and his family after he has seen a sketch of "Friend" by Haru Namio--Volume 12 Chapter 8-9). In later volumes, it's been concluded that Fukubei is indeed the mysterious figure, "Friend". But what's his real motive behind his copy-cat behaviour? Why would one do such horrible things?
